RESULTS NOT HYPE

DevOps is a set of skills. DevOps is a job title. DevOps is new name for my group. DevOps is a way of developing and operating software that produces the best results for customers. DevOps is a philosophy, a movement. DevOps is marketing hype. All of the above.

We believe DevOps stands for a set of clear goals software teams want to achieve. Speaking in Agile terminology, these goals are clearly encapsulated at the highest level under two Epics:

• Continuous Integration
• Continuous Deployment

Most all DevOps tasks or User Stories fall under these Epics. The key to DevOps success, in practical terms, is knowing how to interweave DevOps user stories with the rest of the functional user stories, how to get the Product Owner own DevOps user stories, how to define DevOps goals as part of the Minimum Viable Product. We think there is a place to visualize Minimum Viable Operations so that DevOps goals are progressively achieved at every stage of product development.

This is no easy task and we have experience doing this for a number of our customers.

Train from within

Many organizations are going through a DevOps Transformation very similar to the Agile Transformation that happened in the last decade. Some organizations haven't even finished their Agile Transformation yet and are forced to undertake a DevOps Transformation simultaneously.

Younger organizations such as Startups have the luxury of starting out with the right approach to their software development and operations goals. These organizations have DevOps Aspirations, that is to say that they know they want all the benefits of DevOps movement.

Both types of organizations require leaders and individual contributors with DevOps mindset. You can do more damage to your organization by bringing in people with old school mindset with the word DevOps sprinkled liberally all over their resume.

We believe there are people within every organization that can be trained and mentored to become internal champions for DevOps. This strategy has several benefits. It preserves and leverages tribal knowledge for the organization, it lowers attrition rates by allowing existing personnel grow internally instead of seeking growth outside, and finally, it lowers the recruitment cost for organizations who need not chase small group of highly paid DevOps professionals.
